We spend about 2 months a year in Playa and have certain restaurants we visit often because they are so good. We aren’t looking for deals, we are looking for places with outstanding food and service, with a nice ambiance. Number one on our list of Italian restaurants in Casa Mediterranea.
Imprevist Restaurant Review
Playa del Carmen has many great restaurants, but last night we went to Imprevist and were blown away by the gourmet quality, service, and ambiance Imprevist offers. We’d gone for breakfast when we were here in September, but wanted to try dinner because we saw so many people dining there.

La Sirena Playa del Carmen
Went to La Sirena last night – great food and lots of fun!!! I love 5th Avenue, but I also like to eat at great places just off 5th Ave., places that can be a little less touristy. I love La Sirena. La Sirena is located on Calle 16, steps south of 5th Avenue in the Porto Playa Condo Hotel Building.
Il Pescatore, One of the Best Restaurants in Playa!
It was our first time, but Ed Vidgen, who lives in Playa (our hero because he lives here) goes often to Il Pescatore Ristorante. It was fabulous! Although we eat at many places on 5th Ave., we love getting off the 5th for quainter, more charming restaurants and this is not at the top of my list.
Best new restaurant in Playa del Carmen: Al Volo
Last night we went to Al Volo, an Italian place on Calle 34 next to Aguachiles (a great fish taco’s restaurant). The owner and cook is Gianpaolo Ferrera, one of the chefs from Asi Beach Club. It was wonderful!!! It’s a small and casual space, so don’t expect a big restaurant or lots of frills. It’s not that kind of place, but it’s the kind of place we will go back to every time we are in Playa!

Entertaining Things to do. I am very happy walking the beach during the day and 5th Ave. at night, but sometimes it’s fun to do something different. Thursdays are great days to do 2 things, both involving drinks and entertainment!
Alux Caverna Restaurant Lounge
Alux is a restaurant, bar, and lounge reiterating Playa’s clubbing and cuisine schemes. Everything revolves around a cave as an experience of descent into the underworld, livened up by a thousand colored lights filtering and vanishing among millenary stalactites. Alux is territory to a most diverse crowd.
